| History of Portuguese |

| Brazilian Portuguese |
 |
 |
There are two acknowledged varieties of Portuguese: European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese. The differences between them, is essentially a result of the language spoken in two geographically and politically separate territories.
Unlike the rest of South America which was under the control of the Spanish, Brazil was discovered by the Portuguese in the 16th Century. As expeditions were sent to explore the vast land area, the size of the territory under Portuguese control increased until it covered the whole of the Amazon region. Independence was finally declared in 1822.
The differences between Brazilian and Portuguese are similar to those between British and American English. Brazilians and Portuguese communicate with each other without the slightest difficulty.
