History of Egypt
The Arab Republic of Egypt touches the Mediterranean and runs down the Northeast of North Africa and the other side of the Suez Canal, part of Southwest Asia-the Sinai Peninsula. The worlds longest river, the Nile, divides the nation.

Our knowledge of Egyptian history spans some six thousand years when the Upper and Lower Kingdoms joined together and became the birthplace for one of history's greatest civilisations. The empire was conquered by a long series of world powers; Persia, Alexander the Great, the Romans and the Byzantines.

Napoleon's armies took control of the territory from the Ottomans in 1798.

Cairo is the dividing point of the nation into Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt (to the North). The Nile Valley and the delta that surrounds Alexandria and Port Said are home to the majority of the population, though less than one tenth of Egypt is settled.

The inhabitants are an intense racial mix of Turks, Greeks, Africans, Arabs, Berbers and those descended from the Ancient Egyptians. These descendants and those of the Arab invaders of the 7th Century form the majority. The indigenous Nubians are an important minority.

The national language of Egypt is Arabic but both English and French are common second languages among the educated.

ARABIC ranks sixth in the world's league table of languages, with an estimated 186 million native speakers. As the language of the Qur'an, the holy book of Islam, it is also widely used throughout the Muslim world.
